About the Chorus
St Dunstan's Chorus (based in Woking, Surrey, England) is a large-scale choral group which gives a Concert each year just before Easter. Rehearsals start each January in St Dunstan's Church function room and we spend a couple of hours in very enjoyable music-making and fun. Indeed many singers regard St Dunstan's Chorus as more of a social diversion than a cultural enterprise, but the fact is that it is both.
We aim to attract those singers who perhaps feel safer within a large group but who still wish to fulfil the achievement of singing in a concert. We are delighted to welcome singers of all abilities - we have no audition but we do require you to be able to sing in tune. You don't have to read music as all the notes will be taught to you thoroughly. We are fortunate in having many experienced singers too, and they lend tremendous musical and moral support to the whole group.
As we only operate for this one season, culminating in our Spring concert, members find they can commit the time for this, whereas they might not be able to sustain a full-year commitment under which other choral societies operate.
Our conductor is John Lillis, choirmaster at St Dunstan's Church. All our concerts are accompanied by William Hayward from whom we commissioned Requiem in 2000 and who composed a new piece for our 2008 season, Ecclesia Aeterna. A report reviewing the 2008 season is now available here.
